Human integrity – when did it go wrong?

“Real integrity is doing the right thing,

knowing that nobody’s going to know whether you did it or not.”
Oprah Winfrey

Something happened lately and it has me thinking – what is happening with our integrity. People lie and cheat, and they seem to be ok with it all. I know that always in society there will be some grey characters but lately it seems like more and more people break with social norms and boundaries. And for what? – to get ahead at any cost, in order to shine or to achieve some arbitrary target…  it really bothers me that we are losing the part of us, the part which makes us be a human. What is happening to compassion, a helping hand or just a plain simple kindness in everyday life? Does our current lifestyle, this so called rat race, really require us to change so much? Is there no more space for kind, gentle souls?

Let’s look at my family… my dad is very firm and assertive but he also has a lot of principles that he would never break, no matter what. He would also never allow others to walk on top of him. He always treats people fairly and with respect but he has a strong hand when it comes to dealings with others. He is what we would call a winner that follows a set of rules which he was brought up with. My mum on the other hand would do anything for anyone if they but only ask… or sometimes even without them asking. She is an extremely good person and she will always put others ahead of herself… in real life we call these people losers… Really? Did we sink so low that we have no space for “good” people anymore? Her colleges or peers will very often use her, knowing that she will never say no.

This bothers me!

It bothers me that we are living in times when so often injustice goes unpunished. What bothers me even more that most of the time there is nothing we can do about it? We’ve been accused of something we didn’t do lately. People told lies to our face and made up facts that never happened… when trying to dispute them they seemed to ignore the real sequence of events because it did not suit their purpose. How can this be? And why do so many of us stand for it?

The other day I met a man walking with his dog on our local football ground. He didn’t pick up the mess after his four legged friend. When asked politely if he is going to clean it up he told me “No! what are you going do about it?” I just thought to myself – nothing, there is nothing I can or will do about it… but maybe I should… maybe when more people will start acting on the small things which go wrong around us, the world will be a better place…

I really would love to know what you think.

Am I losing my mind and just hanging out with the wrong crowd of people or are we really becoming less sensitive and more robust in these days. Why does something unacceptable just a few years ago, like lying become a tool in everyday life. Do we really have to lie, cheat and compromise our principles in order to survive? Is there really no space for good, kind and all loving people around us?

I thought the meek where meant to inherit the earth….

  1. Me too. Either I’m to old to understand “the rules” of this dog-eat-dog society or I’m on the wrong planet.

  2. I have seen a shift to people working too much and too fast with our current technology. It is easier to not care when dealing with others through electricity! Strange! However, I did read an interesting article that there seems to be a shift from people wanting to drop out off the grid more and I think that is a good thing. People need time for reflection and meditation and not just keep droning on without much thought. I’m trying to be hopeful. I have two young girls so I would hate to think that is not true.

  3. Couldn’t have agreed more with you. Sometimes the dog-eat-dog attitude shocks me

  4. We are living in a world where “the end justifies the means” has become an acceptable school of thought…

  5. I think that humans are forced to live in a way that is completely unnatural to us, and as a result normal behaviour starts to breakdown. In the past we lived in smaller communities, or family groups and everyone contributed to the good of the whole as it was better for them. Now it seems that the reward, or benefit for doing the right thing is less than the effort it takes, so sadly, people stop.

I do like to think that in general the majority of people are decent.

  6. I think a lot of people go around in a constant state of anger and entitlement these days, which is exacerbated by social media. Fortunately there are still good, honest people out there 🙂

  7. Delphina

Thank you for writing a post that has me thinking.

  8. The culture of doing things for no other reason than that they were the ‘right’ thing does seem to have faded into oblivion.
Poetic justice for the dog walker would have been to say sweetly, ‘I’m going to ensure that you take it with you.’ – and smear it on him! (But only if one can run really fast.) 🙂

  9. Yeah Its easy to get caught up in this for sure. There are a lot of dishonest people out there and a lot of wrongdoings that happen. I try to find the positives and not focus on it to much or find myself being sucked in. lol

  10. I feel your frustration. People suck – they’re the worst.
I’m far more passive-aggressive (i.e. Canadian) when confronting people though, though I still do confront. Take the scooping poop – I’m more likely to approach and say “oh, do you need a bag?” Though I can’t imagine what kind of person would knowingly leave that behind after being acknowledged. Takes all kinds.
Anyway, I think it’s more ambivalence and self-absorbtion than insensitivity as a whole.

  11. There are lots of mean selfish people in the world, but at the same time there are a lot of good people too. Just hard to see them at times when we’re surrounded by the former type

  12. This is a great post. Integrity has gone downhill nowadays.

  13. you are so right! you just spoke my mind! the world is changing so fast and with each moment, a little bit of humanity is vanishing from earth. its almost everyday , i come home and say aloud, where is the conscience in people? we , specially are the children of transition, that’s why it’s even more hard for us accept this change!

  14. Sometimes we just have to endure even if we know they are lying… it feels worst when your friend is lying straight to your face.. 😥 #giglove

  15. Sometimes when I think about it, it’s really sad with the world that we now live in. xx giglove

  16. I agree with this post. It seems that the world nowadays encourages people to be less human, and that being a jerk is a socially acceptable behavior.

  17. It’s a sad fact. Only we have the complete control of ourselves. gig

  18. don’t let the behaviour of your peers/people around you affect who you are. you can’t change others and make them kinder. But remember, as long as you hold on to the kindness in you, you’re allowing the world to have 1 more kind soul. 🙂
    gig love

  19. there is definitely a lot food for thought in your post. I think we should not give up and when confronted by people like this we should actually do something not violence off course but show them that they cannot take advantage of everything. I hope everything turns our well for your family

  20. i totally agree! i think its all about greed nowadays leading to all of this. it tends to be the people who only think about themselves leading to a “happy” life when inside they’re not. I’m just glad that there’s people out there who aren’t like that and they tend to be genuinely happy.

  21. Great post! You are right – people are really less sensitive these days.

  22. I am constantly shocked by the lack of common courtesy, manners, and decency in modern society. People can be so awful to one another!

  23. This is so true and sad…this days people just do whatever it takes to get what they want… doesn’t matter if that included hurting and using other people… most vulnerable ones are at the very bottom of the pyramid because there’s not kindness anymore 😦 I was talking with my husband about this the other day… True is, people seams to be more worried about building their online life (more likes…more followers…etc…) than being genuine and kind in real life… that even include manners ! it’s just shocking!
    Great post! ❤

  24. I think what you write is pretty true, but it’s not the only reality. I meet very talented, generous and good people everyday. Ok, it’s not the majority, but when you meet someone you should think you are blessed and there is not only bad in the world. Complaining is not the right way. go on with your principles and with people who share them. The others leave them behind. You are going to be prized one day.

  25. Great post! I agree with almost everything you have said, it’s sad but we can’t do anything about how people act towards others. We can give them advices but it’s still up to them if they will follow your advice or not. The best thing we can do is to be the best person we can be and proud of. ^^

  26. A very interesting and thought-provoking post you have here. I agree with all your points here. Gig

  27. well thats life….people cheat n tell lies…

  28. I am glad to hear that I’m not the only person that feels similarly! Sadly I feel like the internet has both brought us together in some aspects but has also made us more obnoxious IRL

  29. This is such an interesting article. We are living in a bag world and I am afraid it will get only worse. gig

  30. You know, you are completely right. It’s really saddening how people have become. At least there are still a few good people out there. gig

  31. This is so true. Sometimes, I want to choose people who I will be kind with because some abuse others. I still don’t understand what’s wrong with Users. Oh I’ve met a lot of them.

  32. I feel you. A lot people nowadays are quite insensitive, what with all this “I-don’t-care-I’m-gonna-do-whatever-I-want” attitude being so prevalent. That’s why I think it’s important to instill the right moral values in children and see values education in schools as a significant tool. 🙂 That way, kids grow up with a good foundation so they’ll know how to become good individuals, even after they move out and live on their own. GIGlove

  33. Agree much with your post! They are so insensitive just do whatever they like hmm :/

  34. Ari

I agree with this post! It both saddens and frustrates how some people can be a lot of the time…

  35. I think real integrity can never be lost. sometimes, they’re just harder to find…

  36. You nailed it in this post. It’s just sad how people how people react these days.

  37. sometimes i just couldnt understand how some human being can be so insensitive. nice post 🙂
