Getting ready for spring with Bonmarche

For all of you who don’t know, Bonmarche is an award winning fashion retailer catering for mature woman over 50. I do not belong to this age category but I did found most of Bonmarche clothing appealing to me. I think it is more about the mature styling really, then an age mark. Being a woman of a certain age some styles are just not for us anymore and should be really left for teenagers to wear. Bonmarche stocks casual and formal wear as well as outerwear, dresses, swimwear, lingerie, nightwear and accessories. They also offer an exclusive Bonmarche collection by formal royal couturier David Emanuel. There is a lot of choice on their website and I am sure everyone can pick something to their liking.

I was offered to try something from the new arrivals section, which has a lot of clothes with spring in mind. My choice wasn’t easy as there were a lot of pieces I wanted but being a reasonable person I narrowed my pick to something which I will make the most use of – my final choice was a Jersey Quilted Gilet in red (RRP £18 but you can get it cheaper at the moment as it is on offer).

My Bonmarche Jersey Quilted Gilet in red

My gilet arrived very quickly… actually it arrived the next day to be exact, which was a pleasant surprise.  My first impression – stunning! It is very soft to the touch and it has the most beautiful flowery inside, which is not visible on any website pictures, so it was something I was not expecting. Once I stopped admiring the finishing touches it was time to put it on… hmmm… it really comes on the big side. This was my first order from Bonmarche so I followed the size guide on the web. According to its sizing I should get size UK18 taking the most important measurement for me, which is bust… so this is what I did… it is way to big… now I wish I hadn’t checked the  size guide and just picked my normal size UK14. Anyway… with something like a gilet being too big is not the end of the world. So my gilet is on and how do I feel? It is nice and soft and it feels really good. A bit too wide at the bottom for my taste, maybe a waist cut in model would suit me a bit better but despite this I like it. Two side pockets are in the perfect places and big enough to store something if needed (I hate clothes with pockets just for look…I never really understood why even make pockets if you cannot put anything into them). After a day of “testing” I must say it keeps you warm.

So, to sum it up:

Pluses:

  • Perfect finish
  • Nice soft material
  • Usable pockets
  • Smooth working zip
  • Warm and comfortable
  • Easy care – machine washable
  • Good price

Minuses:

  •  Size on the big side, but now I know the sizes this is avoidable
  •  Straight cut

Overall:

I would totally recommend it, despite the few things I didn’t like so much. I think this gilet offers very good value for money and it can be an essential part of your wardrobe the whole year round. It is easy to style and it will add a nice splash of colour to your final look. It is available in two colours: red and chartreuse (which is sort of pale yellow).

Do you like it? Would you make a use of it?

Or maybe you got your own favourite pick from Bonmarche?

I received a red gilet from Bonmarche for free for review purpose. All opinions are honest and my own.
